Filtering Process

The process of selecting names for my original selection involved research names associated with music in general such as latin words for pitch and tone.

I also gained inspiration from the Alternative and Indie Rock genre as I felt this would relate to my magazine better. Examples include song names, lyrics and words associated with bands terms, expressions within the genre.

Survey

In order to gain an idea of which names associated with my target audience best, I asked a group of 20 people to choose 10 names they liked the least, by making them choose a large selection each, it left me with a large enough pool of names to make my own decision based on meaning and aesthetic sounding .

Final Selection

After evaluating my options, I decided Defiant Magazine was my best choice. The word 'Defiant' suggests that the magazine is rebellious and against the rules, this therefore suggests the genre of Alternative. The magazine can be shortened in order to allow a shorter name overall.

To the left is the image where I experiement with fonts in photoshop, I will make a decision from this to decide which one suits my magazine and the genre most.

Photoshoots

Below are some images that I took of various locations for my magazine photographs. This will allow me to evaluate different locations before I take the acutal photographs, so I can use my time efficiently. Each location is local, allowing me to get a full band (my main artist) organised for a shoot at short notice. A large variety of locations were chosen to allow me to have a wide range of different connotations for each photograph.

During a formal setting such as a photoshoot, bands often tend to match each other when it comes to both outfit and style. This can be seen by The Killers and Green Day with suits to the right and allows the band to be seen as a group and therefore more as one, connoting comradery, an aspirational feature which fans wish for.

In an informal setting, bands don't tend to match outfits however their style often reflects their genre but in a more casual way.

Colours within the band scene largely depend on the genre of the band, if a band is more grungey or hard rock suck as Green Day or Bring Me The Horizon, they are likely to have more greyscale, whereas an alternative band are likely to feature more colour within their clothing and art.

Common locations found within band photoshots include studios, outside scenery such as countryside or derelict space. These areas are chosen either through personal connection to the band or how it looks within the house style.

The most common expression for bands to use is a neutral or serious face that form a direct connection to the reader by establishing a direction of gaze. The most common accessories used are instruments during studio shots, however, some bands use clothing accessories such as sun glasses and hats in order to give them a sense of confidence and swagger.

Front Page

To the left are the stories in which I have decided to place on my front page, I have made the selection by looking at my list of contents and selecting the stories I believe will lure my target audience and suit my genre the best, these include statements which are intended to grab the audience's attention.

My main story will accompany the image and will feature a quote in order to stay consistent with the industry and my article. The taglines will feature at the bottom of the front page, whilst the coverlines will be positioned to the left of the image on the side.

To the right are certain elements of my contents page, I have decided to implement a three column approach, limiting the space of my content by having a large image of a festival in order to attract the audience's attention. Therefore, I have decided to select the most important stories from my magazine in order to maintain space and lead the magazine's audience towards certain stories.

The image of the festival is accompanied by a well known logo and a tagline of "Win tickets to this years," with a page number close by, leading the audience onto this page.

Double Page Spread

To main feature of my DPS is the article, which is based around the main story of my magazine, a band named N17. The article itself is long, I have therefore spread it over two pages, with the other two featuring seperate images. There are also two different formats of writing within my article, the first is a description based piece on the band's rise to fame, building up to an interview of the band, which exposes their stories and decision making when becoming a band, building a connection.

Another feature of my DPS is the pull quote which is used, this is positioned next to the band name, and uses a font which makes it stand out, giving it an impact upon the reader.

In order to gain images for my band, I organsied a photoshoot where we went to two locations. The first location was in a music studio, this allowed me to get all 4 members playing the instruments. I made them play a song and get into it, whilst acting as a fly on the wall, allowing me to photograph their raw emotions.

The second location was the school gym hall, this allowed me to have a relatively plain background sothat I could cut the band out and put them on a unique, custom background. Combined, these two locations provide me with over 400 photographs to choose from. The images above have made it to my shortlist and will therefore be edited and put wihin my  magazine.

I also took many photos outside of the photshoot which could be used for many unique features of my magazine. These images were taken during events such as Warped Tour, an alternative festival which would allow me to relate directly to my genre and contains many people from my target audience.

Other images were taken of a friend in a record shop and of a fan meetup with Neck Deep, another popular location within my genre. These would be located on my contents page and would act as another feature for my magazine. My final location is within the city, the first is of Victoria Station, taken whilst travelling and exploring, and the other is from train tracks, locations which are frequently used as backgrounds for photoshoots within my genre.
